20 Practical Ways You Can Fit Self-Care into Your Busy Lives

Hi there, fellow busy bees!

Life can sometimes feel like a whirlwind, especially when you're juggling work, family, and countless responsibilities. In the midst of it all, self-care often takes a backseat, leaving us feeling drained and depleted. My last blog was all about the importance of self-care and I could feel you rolling your eyes and shouting at the screen - "That's all very well, but when am I supposed to fit it in!"

Well, fear not, because today I'm here to share 20 practical ways you can fit self-care into your jam-packed lives. Yes, even with your busy schedule, you can still prioritize your well-being and recharge those batteries. Let's dive in!

1. Start with Mini Self-Care Moments:

Don't wait for that big chunk of time to magically appear - you and I know it's unlikely at best. Start small by incorporating mini self-care moments throughout your day. Take a few deep breaths, sip on your favourite tea, or enjoy a short walk during your lunch break. These small moments add up and make a significant difference in restoring your energy. Put your phone down and just enjoy the moment.

2. Set Boundaries:

Learn to say "no" when your plate is already full. Setting boundaries is crucial for creating space in your life for self-care. Remember, it's okay to prioritise yourself and decline additional commitments when you need time to recharge. This is a toughie, but if you are anything like me, you'll find it gets easier as you get older 😉

3. Wake Up Earlier:

Consider setting your alarm clock a bit earlier than usual. Use this time in the morning to engage in activities that bring you joy and set a positive tone for the day. It could be meditation, journaling, or simply enjoying a peaceful cup of coffee. Just give it a try for a week and see if it helps...go on...I dare you...

4. Use Technology Mindfully:

Instead of mindlessly scrolling through social media, actually use technology as a tool for self-care. Explore meditation apps, listen to calming music or podcasts, or engage in online communities that align with your interests and well-being. It does help if you can silence your notifications for 10 minutes too.

5. Delegate and Ask for Help:

Remember, you don't have to do it all alone. Delegate tasks and ask for help when needed. Whether it's getting assistance with household chores or delegating responsibilities at work, sharing the load allows you to free up time for self-care. We are all bad at this one! Start off with a very small thing and build up if you find this particularly difficult.

6. Take Advantage of Waiting Time:

We spend a significant amount of time waiting in lines, at appointments, or during our children's activities. Instead of growing impatient, use this time for self-care. Carry a book, listen to an audiobook, or practice mindfulness exercises to make the most of these waiting periods. Let the frustration go, stop thinking about all the things you could be doing and just 'be'.

7. Practice Mindful Eating:

Transform mealtime into a self-care ritual. Slow down, savour each bite, and fully engage your senses. By practicing mindful eating, you nourish both your body and your soul. Yes, there's a lot of 'mindful' stuff on this list - are you getting the point yet..?

8. Incorporate Movement:

Physical activity is not only essential for your physical health but also for your mental well-being. Find ways to incorporate movement into your daily routine, whether it's a short workout, stretching breaks, or even a dance party with your kids in the kitchen.

9. Create a Self-Care Menu:

Make a list of self-care activities that work for you and keep it handy. When you have a moment, refer to your self-care menu and choose an activity that fits your current needs and time constraints.

10. Make Use of Lunch Breaks:

Instead of working through your lunch break, use this time to recharge. Step away from your desk, go for a walk, enjoy a healthy meal, or engage in a hobby you love.

11. Practice Gratitude:

Creating a gratitude habit can significantly impact your well-being. Take a few moments each day to reflect on the things you're grateful for. It can be as simple as appreciating a beautiful sunset or acknowledging the support of loved ones. If you have the time and inclination, write them down each day, then you will have a fabulous list to look back on when things are tough.

12. Embrace the Power of Breathing:

Just writing that made me giggle! Obviously, I mean a little more than just 'keep breathing'. Deep breathing exercises are a simple and effective way to centre yourself and reduce stress. Take a few minutes each day to focus on your breath, inhaling deeply through

your nose and exhaling slowly through your mouth. I always do this when I'm stuck at traffic lights in the car. It works a treat.

13. Find Joy in Everyday Moments:

Bring mindfulness to your daily activities and find joy in the present moment. Whether it's enjoying a cup of tea, playing with your children, or indulging in a hobby, savour the small moments that bring you happiness. Yes, more mindfulness - be 'in the moment' guys!

14. Schedule Self-Care Time:

Just like you schedule important appointments, block out dedicated self-care time in your calendar. Treat it as a non-negotiable commitment to yourself. This is a game changer - honestly. Give it a try and treat it like any other meeting that can't be cancelled.

15. Connect with Nature:

Spending time in nature has a rejuvenating effect on our well-being. Take a walk in the park, go for a hike, or simply sit in your back garden and appreciate the beauty of the natural world.

16. Practice Self-Compassion:

It is very easy to be kind and compassionate towards others, but it takes some practice to be kind to yourself. Acknowledge that you're doing your best, and it's okay to prioritise self-care. Let go of self-judgment and embrace self-compassion.

17. Engage in Creative Outlets:

Explore your creative side as a form of self-care. Have a go at painting, writing, gardening, or playing a musical instrument. You don't have to actually be any good at them! We're always telling our children to just 'have a go', well, practice what you preach - it's fun! These outlets allow you to express yourself and tap into a sense of joy and fulfilment.

18. Prioritise Sleep:

Adequate sleep is vital for your overall well-being. Create a soothing bedtime routine, establish a regular sleep schedule, and ensure your sleep environment is comfortable and conducive to quality rest. You already know this one, but it's so hard to actually get off that sofa and go to bed isn't it!? One easy trick you can use is to set a bedtime alarm on your phone (something soothing) and then leave your phone in another room where you can hear it, but have to get up to turn it off. Once you're up, you may as well carry on up the stairs...

19. Practice Mindful Parenting:

Incorporate mindfulness into your parenting journey. Be present with your children, actively listen to them, and engage in activities that strengthen your bond. By being mindful parents, we teach our children the importance of self-care and well-being. Yes, it's the 'm' word again, but this is the most important of all. Give your child your focus. If you have to finish something first, tell them and then when it's done, give them your focus.

20. Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection:

Remember, self-care is a journey, and it's not about perfection. Celebrate the progress you make, even if it's small steps. Each act of self-care contributes to your overall well-being. Imperfect action is still action.

Remember, you fabulous people, self-care is not a luxury; it's a necessity. It allows you to show up as the best version of yourself for your loved ones and, most importantly, for yourself.

Here's to making self-care a vibrant part of our busy lives!

With love and self-care,

Gilli
